QUESTION:

I have just purchased a MFT gelding, 9 years old. He now has shoes on all 4 feet. There are clips on each foot. I would like to take the back shoes off as most of my riding will be in woods and on dirt roads. The farrier I plan to use has never had experience with a MFT.
( I'm not sure anyone in this area has - I live in North Carolina) Is it a good idea to remove the back shoes? What advice would you give the farrier on shoeing this horse? This horse will be kept in a pasture with other horses that are barefoot on the back feet. Mostly Morgans and 1 Thoroughbred. Please advise. Thank you so much.

ANSWER:

Brenda,

I would keep your horse shod all around, when they are foxtrotting they are sliding a little behind and would wear down their back feet. Tell your farrier to shoe your horse to his natural angles, ie, shoulder/pastern/hoof with flat keg shoes.
