QUESTION:
Hi, we got our first foxtrotter and he is nice and smooth. He has always been barefoot. There is an Amish gentleman here in central Indiana that shoes my buddies walking horses and he uses plates, but on the front hoofs he puts borium on the plates. He thought this would work on my foxtrotter, what do you think? He will be ridden in all kinds of terrain and blacktop roads. Thanks
Dan
Dan,
I don't like the "spots" of borium that folks use today. There is
no "give" to this and it can put too much torsion on the horse's joints.
For all terrain riding I use rim shoes or eventer shoes. If you must ride
on blacktop I would use borium headed horse shoe nails, (3-4 per shoe)
these nails give plenty of traction on all surfaces. (including ice) They
also allow for enough "give" to prevent over torqueing the joints.
