Horses Are Fun

by Matthew

My name is Matthew. I started riding horses 3 years ago when I was 9 years old.  My mom has fox trotters and a quarter horse. I learned to ride on a fox trotter.  My mom rides young horses that have never been ridden and need experience.  When she thinks they are far enough along she will let me ride them. She uses "Hosslogic" in her training and I have never had trouble riding horses she has trained that way.

I like to ride my own horse when my faimly goes on rides. Sometimes I want to be by myself and my mom lets me ride to our creek bed not far from the house. It is maybe about 1/8 mile from our house and is usually dry. I like to make a sandwich and eat it there. I sometimes like to pretend that I am living back before we had cars.  My mom gave me a walky talky so I can reach her if I need to and shee checks on me a lot because she worries.  Even with the "safety checks", as mom calls them, I am able to be out in the woods with my horse to think or just forget troubles. Being with my horse is the best way I know to relax.

One day I stayed longer than I planned to stay and got home just before I was to go to a camp out with our church.  I wanted my mom to take care of my horse, but she said it was my responsibility.  She says it is better to be a little late than to neglect a friend.
