Q.
Hi my name is Eric and l live in Australia and have just got a job
in a place called Cryal Castle as a jouster and would like to teach my
horse to rear up . so any info about this woulb be great ..thanks
A.
This is relatively easy. First, you sit back in order to take your
weight off of the shoulders, While you are giving leg aids to
move forward, at the same time use just enough rein pressure to stop
forward movement. If you work slowly and easily with your
horse you will be able to regulate just how high your horse will rear.
When you are teaching this, the object is to just get your
horse to raise up just a short distance. As soon as you get a low rearing
up, release the rein pressure and give the "move forward" signal. This
method teaches the horse to rear on command, and to work under control.
A horse that rears due to fear or pain is uncontrollable and dangerous.
There is a lesson for beginning riders here also. Some riders
inadverdently give their horses the signal to rear which can lead to accidents
and injury. If your horse should rear when you are not asking for
it move forward in the saddle, release pressure from your reins and legs,
and push down forcefully as far as you can reach on the horse's neck. This
should be done immediately!!
Hope this helps,
Bob
